The word "agent" has been overused in AI marketing since 2024. Every chatbot with a plugin called itself an agent. Most of them were chatbots with plugins. But the underlying concept is real, and it is maturing fast: an AI system that can plan a sequence of actions, use tools, check its own work, and operate for extended periods without human intervention.

Code generation and debugging: agents can write, test, and fix code across multiple files, running tests and iterating until the code passes. Data analysis: give an agent a spreadsheet and a question, and it will clean the data, run calculations, generate charts, and write up findings. Content drafting: emails, reports, marketing copy, social media posts. Scheduling and coordination: managing calendars, sending invitations, following up on action items.

Here is what does not work well. Tasks requiring taste, political judgment, or social sensitivity. Anything where the agent needs to know when to stop and ask a human. Multi-day projects that require maintaining context and adjusting strategy as new information arrives. Second, agents will interact with the physical world through IoT devices, robotic interfaces, and smart infrastructure. An office management agent could handle procurement, maintenance scheduling, energy optimization, and vendor coordination. Third, agents will negotiate with other agents on your behalf, creating markets where AI systems transact at machine speed within parameters you set.

Start with single, verifiable tasks. Ask an agent to summarize a document, clean a dataset, or draft an email. Check the output. Learn the agent's strengths and failure modes. Once you trust it on single tasks, combine them: "Research this topic AND draft a one-page brief." Then extend the time horizon: "Monitor this inbox for the next 24 hours and flag anything urgent." Each step builds your understanding of what the agent handles well and where it needs guardrails.
